Hi, I’m Ikram! To get to know me as a person - is to know my many names and their meanings. Ikram - honor, hospitality and generosity Deqa - humble and bringer of enough happiness Janice - nickname coming from genius Dalia - staying graceful and remaining kind Not only do these names that I have been given, describe me perfectly - but for myself I would say that I’m a lover of nature and adventure; but I’m also a woman who is fearless when going after her dreams and also dreams of changing the world for the better, one year at a time. To understand me best - In my early twenties, I moved to Spain and Saudi Arabia - without ever knowing the place or anyone there. Just decided, packed my things, bought my ticket and moved with what little I had saved to make it on my own, out in the world. A little wild, yes, I know. But also the best experiences of my life and definitely the places that have made me into the woman I’m now in my mid-30s. And even though it sounds a little crazy and very scary - that has somehow always been my story - I always had the spirit of being able to just pack up and move without feeling any real attachment to the place where I grew up and lived. And since it’s unexplainable to myself - I attribute it to being Somali and my nomadic genes that run deep within. And because of my Somali genes, and since I was displaced as a child due to the civil war - I have also always dreamed of and plan on one day opening an orphanage to give back to the generations that have had it worse.
Thus - Second Summer (as an organization) was born out of the love that I have for traveling (I’ve been to 35+ countries, mostly on my own); but of also wanting to combine that with giving back and building something for future generations. It is also born out of the curiosity that is within me of exploring new places and constantly wanting for more (my ancestral nomadic side), and the desire to always plan the best possible experience (for myself or others)- whether we’re visiting a place - for a day or two, or a week or more to explore the best of a new place. And most importantly - Second Summer - is about sharing what I love to do (hosting and planning holidays for others wherever I’m living). So come join me, and I promise you won’t be disappointed and you’ll go back wanting to come back for more.
